Lens Hood

Lens hoods are generally classified into two types; the most common type is the "petal shaped" or "flower" lens hood. The other type is the "round" lens hood.

Petal shaped lens hoods are more friendly as it can be use on a wide varieties of lens (wide-angle lens to telephoto lens).

The round lens hoods are usually use in extremely bright condition. However, when use on wide angle lens, it may create vignetting (A reduction of an image's brightness or saturation at the periphery compared to the image centre).

Flower shaped lens hoods are most often used on zoom lenses as a normal lens hood may block the field of view on some zoom settings.

Lens hoods are more prominent in telephoto lenses because the field of view has a smaller viewing angle than of wide-angle lenses. For wide angle lenses, the length of the hood (away from the end of the lens) cannot be as long as those for telephoto lenses because of the viewing angle.

Although MC UV filters do reduce light flare, it cannot substitute a lens hood as they can prevent stray light/light flare from hitting the lens. This will generally allow images to have deeper saturation and richer colors.

Lens hoods can also act as a shield for the lens. The extra cover that the lens hood provides prevents the lens from scratches and 'shields' the lens from a certain degree of impact. However, lens hood that are short offer little protection (usually for wide-angle lens).

Lens hood also helps to protect the front lens element from rain, snow etc.
